Library History

The University of Ioannina was founded in 1964. The Library of the University was established the same year. Until 1973 the University was a branch of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Α distributed Library system was adopted due to premises restrictions of the new University using the model which was also applied in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. There was a "Central Library" service and departmental Libraries for each University Department.

Throughout the years departmental libraries were created for the Schools of the University. In 2002 the new building of the Central Library was completed and the unification of all of the individual Libraries began.

Today the Library and Information Center of the University of Ioannina (LIC-UI) is housed in the new building in the center of the university campus. The building consists of six floors and has a surface that makes it the largest academic library in our country.

The building of the Central Library also hosts the Departments of Economics and Fine Arts and Sciences of Arts.
